The clack fan guide
Clack fans: what they are and how to clack
A clack fan is a big folding hand fan that snaps open with a loud CLACK. Drag queens made them famous, and now you'll hear them at every Pride, rave and hen do. Here's everything you need to know.
What is a clack fan?
Our clack fans are 33 cm long and about 62 cm wide when they're open, with strong bamboo ribs and a printed fabric face that runs edge to edge.
The sound comes from the ribs snapping against each other as the fan flicks open. The faster the flick, the louder the clack.
How to clack
1. Hold it closed
Grip the bottom of the closed fan firmly in your hand, printed side facing out.
2. Flick
Flick your wrist out and down in one sharp move, like you're shaking off water.
3. Clack
The fan snaps open with a CLACK. Practise a few times and it'll get louder.
4. Close
Gather the ribs back together from the outside edge and fold it closed.
Looking after your fan
Keep it dry
Fold it away if it rains and let it dry open if it gets wet.
Close it gently
Gather the ribs rather than slamming it shut.
Store it closed
A closed fan in a bag stays flat and ready for the next night out.
